Pruning Group 1 Clematis

Clematis vines in pruning group 1 bloom in the early spring, they first bloom in the spring from buds that set the previous year.

They bloom on old wood, and do not tend to die back down to the ground in the winter.

Lightly prune out the dead and weak stems in the spring only once the first blooms have been spent. Only clear out dead and untidy stems.
